Tate DeLaRosa Day 2

Top 3 day of my life so far. Porsche and Mercedes were excellent. The Mercedes line is certainly one of the most advanced in the world. Shell assembly was automated to an extreme degree i.e. welds and paint, but there was still a good bit of hand assembly assisted by robots. It never really occurred to me that a robot would essentially caddy for assemblers on the line.

While Porsche did have the UGVs, the company has committed to a much more hand-fit and finished product. One of the most impressive parts for me was the leatherwork. It has to be unblemished to go in a 911. Almost half of the leather is unacceptable and unfit to go in their halo car, but the ‘industrial waste’ is still good for premium wallets and belts.

The difference in the lines was immense, to say the least. Mercedes looked like they built wherever they want, but Porsche was making it work on their original grounds and factory.
