Today was Mercedes-Benz and Porsche. At Mercedes-Benz, I was not expecting to see an entire city that they built around the factories. I’ve heard of a few companies that do this, but not seen it in person. The system of carrying the vehicle around to the worker, changing heights, angles, and the parts staying with the body the entire way. The way that they keep everything aligned and in order is amazing. Then we went to Porsche. To start off, my group went into the museum first, then into the factory. This factory is slapped down in the middle of a city. The museum was very interesting, seeing the first vehicle that they made, a tractor, their race cars, and a timeline of cars as they were made. We got to see the upholstery and 911 final assembly lines. The insane number of customizations alone blew my mind. I was not expecting that. I was also surprised by how manual this assembly line was. The guide did say that it was the least automated due to the age, but still I think you’re lucky if we seen 5 automated helpers besides the crate robots.
