A large portion of the day was spent on trains. When we arrived in Rotterdam, however, this city is completely different from the previous two cities. One of the first I noticed is that this city is somewhat aquatic, with boats moving along the Nieuwe Maas, which is a distributary of the Rhine River, running through South Holland. Second was that we are now in an area of where World War II was actually fought in Europe, not merely areas that were heavily bombed. The scenery was beautiful, and getting to try the food here was very enjoyable. I spent a lot of time just walking around and looking at the city, and there’s a lot happening here, it’s very vibrant.
On my night walk, I found this statue, titled “De verwoeste stad”, or “The Destroyed City”. The original concept for the statue was ideaized in around 1946, when Rotterdam was in ruins following the war. It was created over the course of several years and was put on display in 1953.
